Agreed. The made-up criteria by US News is quite arbitrary and self-fulfilling. For example, US News came up with "college readiness index" which simply looks at the percentage of kids who took and passed an AP exam. So of course magnet schools would be high up there. A typical school that serves a very poor and disadvantaged population obviously won't have the luxury of having so many kids able and ready to take AP exams.
If US News instead had a metric that tracked improvement of low-performing kids at a school over some years, then one could actually conclude that the school was truly doing a good job.
Local school systems don't seem to have this metric, so no surprise that US News doesn't either. However, the metrics they use are a useful proxy if you want to identify schools with a lot of high-achieving kids. The rankings can, of course, be gamed to some extent. The most obvious example in NoVa is Marshall HS, which has eliminated Honors English 11 and 12 and defaults kids into AP English classes to boost its "college readiness" score.
That's what irks me the most. These types of rankings essentially point out which schools have high-achieving kids which in the end is a proxy for having the most wealthy parents. They are hardly meaningful measures of the school itself, meaning the teacher quality, administrator-teacher synergy, and support staff. A school could have terrible teachers and administrators but have a glowing ranking because the kids have so much parental support from an educated background.
But so many uninformed people genuinely believe the school staff is terrible at their job at a low-ranked school and I take that personally although I know I shouldn't.

Congratulations to TJ!
Congratulations for what??? It's a magazine ranking on a piece of paper. It's not like they have won some competitions.
Congrats on being named the best high school in the country! You, the students, are doing great despite all the hate.
The latest rankings are based on a mix of 2018-19 and 2019-20 school data for graduating students. To the extent the rancor relates to the change in the TJ admissions process, that has no impact on the 2022 US News ratings.
I think the former Education Secretary Qarni had wrote to USNW in 2020 and complained that TJ should not be ranked number 1 high school in the country so yes, rancor related to the change in the TJ admissions process certainly had an affect.
