Mine dropped them for the summer finally. And I expect won reinstate them in the fall especially since vaccines should finally be available.

We still have parents at our daycare who want their kids to wear masks OUTSIDE , to “avoid confusion.” The kids haven’t actually been required to wear outside for months. Masks outside have always been dumb but I don’t know how anyone can think a 2yo in a mask on a 90+ degree day is remotely safe.

It's telling that even adults who wear masks in stores or at work will not wear them at social events. It's uncomfortable and inhibits social interactions. If we're requiring kids who are at a key point in their social development to wear masks for hours each day we had better have evidence that they actually reduce transmission in that population. Seeing as my DD will absolutely not keep it over her nose for more than a minute, I would venture to guess it is pretty useless in her case.

A month ago I would have said for sure not, but this recent surge that feels right on top of the last... makes me less sure.

I still think they won't mask in the fall as the most likely option. They will fall in line with whatever the public school system does. The vaccine will be available to kids (probably, or it will be official that it not coming soon), and many of the parents/families will have had their first (or more) COVID infection, which will force people to accept that transmission is going to happen.

I agree.

1. Because masking toddlers is cruel. 2. They are in a major language learning time and shouldn't have a mask on. The damage that wearing a mask will do will be far worse than Covid. Just waiting for the studies to come out showing how damaging it is/was 3. They take them off to eat and sleep anyway which basically makes the masking pointless even if it did "work".

+1 to all this. At our daycare I’d estimate 90% of the kids are still masking (and all the teachers). And Covid still spread - HALF of the kids in one class ended up testing positive this past week. I’m hoping this changes some attitudes about masking at our center after this.

Re hindrance to language development, I agree. But not being able to go to school would deter developments even more. So, on this, it's either that we all don't wear masks, but no more shutdown if there are cases (and just let it spread). If we still have a class closure when there's a positive case, I rather have my children wear mask so they can continue going to school and learning.

If you had a child who did care about wearing a mask you would feel differenttly (I have one who will wear it but comes home upset everyday over it).

And another DC is currently undergoing speech therapy. The masks did not create the articulation problem, but it exacerbated it.

I disagree that it's cruel for all toddlers (mine doesn't care) but I think the fact that it's ineffective and possibly detrimental to language development is sufficient argument against masks. That being said, my DC daycare shows no signs of dropping them, unfortunately.

Not almost-it is useless.

And yet at ours almost everyone is still wearing, even the kids who had Covid a few weeks ago!
