For the other posters with comments about trailer trash, tacky and trashy I am saddened by these comments. Although their choices are not my choices I do not denigrate them, instead I try to educate and share knowledge. I hope we all can do the same for one another in which ever areas of life where we have uncertainties.

DP here. My child’s university uses a payment service called NelNet that, in communication with the parents, should allow you to make a separate log in for you to access. There will be no added fee unless you pay with a credit card or debit card rather than debit card.
$1-2k should not trigger any gift tax limits.

I hear he had extended time. Spent way too long on his theology exam, and they still accepted it. It's like his father's someone important or something.

DP here. I am aware if that but OP specifically mentioned needing to cover OOS tuition, implying that that is more expensive than their instate option.
