I lived in Langley and attended Potomac school growing up.  After graduation from college, I lived in Reston for a few years before moving back to McLean after my parents gave money to buy a luxury condo, the one across from Starbucks and Capital One bank.  I got a lot more hits and dating opportunities from my match.com profiles where I stated that I live in McLean.  

It’s understandable why some who can’t afford to live where their parents live and wondering whether they’ll ever be able to enjoy a comparable lifestyle make peace with it and decide it wasn’t all that to begin with. Bloom where you’re planted - or where you can afford rent or a mortgage.

I can guarantee you that the people buying the $2M-plus homes in McLean now don’t care if someone who grew up in McLean or Arlington 35 years ago is still working out their feelings about it.

OP, consider Old Town/Beverly Hills/Del Ray. Average SES keeps going up, though home prices are still more affordable than McLean and many parts of Arlington (though that may change as HQ2 really gets up and running). Ignore the noise on DCUM about our the public schools, they’re very solid. Very close commute to DC and lots to do and doesn’t feel “suburban.”

I grew up in nova and yeah I don’t recall anyone ever dreaming of wanting to do anything but leave here. Most of my local friends who grew up here have moved out of this area.

I would dream of moving to Peru or Iceland or something. Not some lame DC suburb like Arlington or McLean LOL.

I grew up elsewhere in Fairfax and there are a lot of people who return to the area. There aren’t a lot of places with the same combination of good jobs, good public schools, nice houses, educated residents, and easy access to major cities and international airports.

Perhaps, but they don't return because they truly love the quality of life. There are pockets of neighborhoods that provide an agreeable living situation if you have to move back because other combinations of life factors. But not McLean. No one who's lived there, then lived elsewhere, is like "yeah I want to move back to McLean."

But people who grew up elsewhere do move to McLean. There must be something attractive about it. For us it is a decent commute to where we need to go, good public schools, and a home that we like.

Same, grew up there, parents still live there and inexplicably love it. I have no desire to ever move back there.
