Yeah, but that’s not what like a Mexican grandmother is cooking. That’s fancy.

It all tastes the same. Salty and greasy. Bland cheap meat.

We were in Arizona last year and ate at some local hole in the wall Mexican restaurants, which were delicious. Funnny enough, DH rightly commented that the inspiration for Taco Bell’s menu does seem to come from these places, haha. Which is obvious but also, I don’t really see that much alignment with the kostly Tex-Mex etc places we have here.

Senor Tequilas is not bad. They have very good refried beans. It's in Germantown though, so a drive for many people.

Still not San Diego/Baja Mexican food. That cannot be found here.

The retried beans, fresh tortillas and salsa at uncle Julio’s are good.
I’m still looking for most things.
There is a food shack in downtown bethesda that does okay burritos. I think it mostly caters to construction workers. I’m not sure it has a name.
Oyamel is nice for fancy food.

I agree with this. We also like Taqueria Picoso and tortas y tacos on Columbia pike

Mex-American/Latina from the Texas border here. Very difficult to find. Manassas and Herndon, I hear, have some authentic spots but I have not been personally.

I think Cielo Rojo, Muchas Gracias, and Oyamel, are authentic but more upscale Mexican. Not your typical spot...or at least not what I grew up with on the border.

Taco Bamba is solid for tacos. Still not quite authentic but good. I probably like Taqueria Habanero and Mezcalero about the same. Chicatana is also good.

But have I found anything that compares to my hometown or some of the spots in Austin and Northern Cal? Nope.

Expat Californian who likes Muchas Gracias, Cielo Rojo, Bandit Taco, and Oyamel. Haven’t tried any of the Victor Albisu restaurants yet.

Are there specific dishes you are looking for?
