Not sure where you are from but I grew up outside of NYC and not only did I know Gettysburg, I am sure my parents’ generation did, too. UMD certainly had the less serious student reputation. I realize that UMd’s reputation has changed over the years.

Again, you could say that about literally every small liberal arts college. To some of us, ever big state flagship is 4-years of non-stop partying, football games and graduating in 5-6 years.

I agree. One in a beautiful historic town, next to a significant piece of history. The other a monstrous institution next to Berwyn Heights and Hyattsville. Visit both and see…I assume that Gettysburg would feel a bit more like “going away to college” but still won’t be that far.

How about worrying more about the education and price. At least that’s what more kids should be worrying about.

Of course. Gettysburg is pretty good. But it’s about the 4+ year experience. Visit and decide. They are not equivalent experiences.

DP. How is it crazy? A lot of kids apply to a wide variety of schools if they need merit aid for privates.

That’s really dumb. Reputation matters a lot when it’s time to find an internship, job, or whatnot.

I hate to break it to you, but for the vast majority of jobs out there it does not matter as much as you are think it does. As long as the school is an accredited, not-for-profit brick-and-mortar school, it hardly matters. It really is HYPSM and then everybody else. And that is okay.

Most people are not destined to be investment bankers or management consultants.

This is also just not true. Gettysburg has a good reputation. I work in the federal government and personally know several people who went there and are now lawyers, computer developers/programmers, etc.. i would argue it has a much better reputation than UMD undergrad.
