Yep. If this were the other way around and she really wanted to name the baby after her father, but DH was vetoing, how many people would be calling him an insensitive monster. Middle names are fair compromises for family names, in my opinion.

The father and his family almost certainly are passing their family name onto the baby. Is that not enough? The kid has to get his entire name from them even if his mom really doesn't like them? And you think the father's family is being disrespected here? What the heck.

Women are not just incubators for the father's family legacy. They are people and parents and they are actually allowed to have a say in this. FFS.

Brain wave: what if OP and her DH find a name they both like? Seems like the best possible compromise.

Wow, projecting much? There are so many names from my dad's generation that I would never give a baby these days that OP doesn't surprise me at all. Here are a few: Gerald, Eugene, Ronald, Howard. I'm guessing if the FIL's name was something like John, Timothy, Gregory, George, etc., OP would be more open to it even if she wanted something more current. But if someone had pressured me to use either my dad's name or my FIL's name for my DC, I would have had a similar reaction to OP, because while I love them both, those names just do not sound right for a baby born in 2022, sorry.

Also, all the Graysons I've met have been girls so I think you are off on your interpretation of trendy boy names.

It doesn't really make a difference, but I'd be more upset about being pressured to name a child an old man name like Harold or Walter compared to Matthew or James.

Is it actually important to your DH? If yes there’s a chance I’d strongly consider it even if I didn’t like the name. Would definitely do it as middle name.

I would not to do it to appease MIL, even if I liked the name tbh. Best not to set an early precedent that you’ll give in to what she wants.
