Maybe instead of a lawyer you can talk to the dcps enrollment team or the placement office.

This post sounds like someone wants to have assurances of attending a particular school without doing lottery. Dcps enrollment rules are pretty straightforward so I wish you luck with this possible lawsuit

without knowing the particular details of your situation, i would be careful to not start paying just any attorney hundreds of dollars per hour in an attempt to address it. the family court lawyers also seem like they should be able to help you secure the right documentation which DCPS will accept.

Call Michael Eig's office. If they can't do it, they'll refer you to someone who can.

Another recommendation for Kim Glassman. She works in adoptions/foster care and special education.

Thanks for this -- this is awful, but the way you phrased it made it sound like this was happening all the time. The Zyaire death was truly awful but not in front of the school. Unfortunately a kid near our charter school was hit by a car too with a similar arm injury.

If the question is your residency, they can do a home visit.

If the question is whether you have the right to enroll the child in school, the OSSE ombudsperson, and or the McKinney Vento coordinator, might be good places to start.

There are personal injury lawyers who make a specialty of suing DC, but I don't think they'd necessarily know the right people for school registration issues. I'd probably start with the lawyer mentioned above who knows family law and special ed.

if you live and pay taxes in DC, it seems like you should only need a temporary custody order to enroll the child

If you have some type of guardianship or notarized letter it shouldn't be an issue. Is this a legal adoption?
