In my teenage years I would not want to share a room with my parents.

I think the biggest issue is will both kids want to keep sharing a bed. The bigger they get, the more room they may want/need. Our kids are 12 and 10 and we prefer not to share a room because we'd rather not go to bed for the night when the kids do, but it still works in a pinch. I think ours are close to too old to be comfortable sharing a bed though.

A lot of people make a different calculation there. And I think if you were truly faced with sharing a room vs no vacation at all, you might make a different choice.

I have three kids with a ten year age span from oldest to youngest. We never stopped sharing rooms. Our last trip was when they were 12-22. There is no way I’m wasting money on a second room. We take air mattresses and sleeping bags if there isn’t enough sleeping space.

For some people having a luxury room where they spend time is important but that’s not us. And we all really enjoy each other. So it works.

Um my kids are 8 and 10 and the only time we’ve shared a room is when we got the last hotel room when the power went out during the derecho. I would rather not go on vacation than spend a week in one room sleeping next to my kids.

We didn’t do many hotel trips in HS, but we would only get one room for all five of us growing up. I expect to do the same for my family of five. We take active vacations, so we aren’t in the room much and I would rather take two trips to an outdoor double for lodging on one trip.

My family w/3 kids shared til I was in HS, sister in college, and younger brother in elementary school. It was fine and we never thought anything of it. My dad then passed away but if we stay in hotels now when doing a mom/sibling trip we still will share sometimes. I prefer my own space so sometimes pay for my own room but that's a personality thing and not bc I think sharing rooms with family in vacation is inherently weird.

Depends on everyone's temperament. I have 1 easy going kid and I wouldn't mind sharing forever, though at some point, she'd likely want her privacy. I have another child who quite literally needs a little space (and a door) and its better for all of us when we can make that happen.

It is a luxury of the wealthy not a requirement. There was recently a thread about how a kids first bike should be a high quality one or they will have a harder time. Well most 5 year olds don't get a high quality bike. They.get whatever is available low cost...And do learn to ride.
