Life long Jew here. Things we have used as the shank bone in no particular order:

A beet
A bone shape cut put of a paper plate
A Milkbone dog biscuit
An actual shank bone that one time I was about 5
A bone made out of construction paper
Playdough.

Ask at the butcher counter. We have used a chicken leg some years. 1st year of the pandemic I had my son draw a picture of one.

That's what you are looking for - it should be kosher meat - it should have meat on it, nit just a bare bone. The one at Wegmans is likely not kosher. You will need to go to a grocery with a kosher butcher or order online.

No my mom says she asks the butcher and they usually give her just the bone for no charge. And of course if you do not keep kosher, no need for a kosher butcher.

Nope. From a religious perspective, there is a requirement that there be at least some meat on the bone. And of course, there are many people who do not keep kosher year-round, but do at Passover or don’t want to use unkosher food/wine when they are saying a blessing over it.

That's a rib bone and a damn fine cut of meat to give to a dog

PP here - yep, I'm aware....learned over many years that the smell of roasting shank bone is the most revolting thing one can have in their kitchen and it lingers for days. The rest of my family eats the other chops (I don't like lamb, can you tell??) but it's become tradition to feed the one from the plate to the dog.

Glad to know about beets. I know where to find that!

Yes, ask the butcher!

where does one find the butcher at the grocery store. There are just racks of meat to grab at the stores I go to.

At the meat counter, not the deli counter. Where they have ribs, steaks, other cuts of meat in the case.

I am laughing wondering if I have walked by this meat couter hundreds of times without seeing it.

What grocery store do you go to?

Ordinary MoCo Giant..Now I want to drive over there just to check.

I’m invested in your shank journey. Did you locate the butcher?

I will report back over the weekend. I do not really have time until then.
