30 years ago, Duke would have been a clear leader in terms of academics, but Vanderbilt seems to have closed the gap. Choosing between these two is more a matter of preference than difference in quality. Duke is starting a residential college that is modeled at Vanderbilt’s, I believe, which is very popular.

Umm no. They both have merits. Nashville has better food and music (even for non-country music fans). It also has more traffic (which should not affect students who live on campus much) and is the bachelorette party capital of the US currently. So young people seem to think it is a fun place to go. Raleigh is a bit “sleepier” , much like Nashville was 15 years ago. I’d choose Vanderbilt, personally.
