I agree with a lot of these recs. Mary Wash, Shenandoah, West Chester. Would add Susquehanna and Lynchburg.

I agree to look at West Virginia, Mary Washington, Shenandoah, VCU, maybe Longwood. Different sizes and atmospheres but I think all are reasonable targets.

Mary Washington
Washington College (one f 10 oldest in US, kind of isolated)
West Chester U (great college town)
Chestnut Hill College (gorgeous, but high percentage women)

Sure, if someone wants to do com sci or engineering, you better have close to a 4.0 for GMU. But for everything else, a 3.1 gpa (at my FCPS HS, based on Naviance) will get you into GMU. We are one of the top 5 FCPS HSs, and we are close to GMU. OP's kid can definitely get into GMU.

Marymount U in Arlington if she wants to be super close to home and doesn't want to do GMU

DD is a sophomore at West Chester and is very pleased with it.

VCU also worth a look. There are lots of small colleges down toward Roanoke that are private also.

NP, guessing that CMU above is a typo and PP meant in-state CNU, Christopher Newport University. CMU is Carnegie-Mellon, in Pittsburgh.

We don't have first hand experience here but OP, I've heard good things about Mary Washington in Fredericksburg too. An earlier PP mentioned Mary Washington. That PP also noted, and I agree, that there is a world of difference between a massive school like WVU and smaller colleges/universities, no matter which ones. Touring different size schools will show her that difference. It's easier to be lost in the crowd as a freshman at a huge university. But I'd be sure your DD tours one so she can judge for herself!
