Right, so has anyone received magnet school wait list invitations for the non-consortium schools? (eg, Clemente/Takoma?)

The other thing about the lottery is that it doesn't let high performing kids choose between humanities and math magnets. There are kids who are qualified for both but they might be lucky to get randomly selected for the "wrong" one. If the PP's child got an offer from King or Eastern and ended up going there I doubt they would find a lot of kids into robotics and programming there either.

They killed to COGAT for this reason even though kids are learning in person. I would not be surprised if they use lottery for high school magnet programs next year.

Unfortunately no one seems to understand this. The current process just disadvantage highly abled students by denying them opportunity to continue their progress. Instead of expanding the opportunities for all kids, whoever there be is adding more constraints dragging students ability down for whatever reason. This is so sad.


The main reason they did this was to address the litigation around the admission changes that added universal screening and locally normed scoring which is considered a best practice for GT program admissions.


Let's be clear. The litigation asserts that the changes they made discriminated against individuals of Asian origin. I think the reason this happened was because of the de-facto segregation in the County, rather than a purposeful intent to discriminate in MCPS. Whatever the reason, however, there was a significant adverse impact on individuals of Asian origin, and they were disproportionately impacted compared to any other race. The new lottery gives a boost to students in poorer schools by allowing them into the pool at lower test scores. We don't know if the lottery is actually working to provide more opportunity for a diverse student body, because the data has not been released.

MCPS is completely transparent about this. The problem is its a random lottery that doesn't serve anyone.


Please show us official language from MCPS that says it uses a RANDOM lottery system.

You mean you want a statement from MCPS saying it is something other than a lottery since by definition they're random. Good luck with that.

NP here, but there's no appeal involved in the middle school magnet consortium (Loiederman, Parkland, Argyle) process. It's completely separate from the humanities and math/science magnet processes.


There's no appeal on the humanities and math/science magnet lotteries, either. You can appeal if you were left out of the lottery, but not on actual selection. Also, because the first round admissions were already handed out when everyone is notified of whether they were in the lottery or not, getting into the lottery on appeal has significantly lower chances of getting selected because the only seats left are the few that were turned down from the first round selection.

MCPS is not publishing data on the lottery, and have thus far refused to release the numbers of students that are in each wait pool. The process and the reporting are so different than is was pre-covid. We asked, and we know several others, who have asked to get an idea of the size of the wait pools, but they said they are not disclosing that info this year.
