My daughter is also transferring. I can tell you that both UVA and VA Tech transfer deadlines have passed, as have UNC, NC State, Northeastern, Boston University. I only know this because these are the schools she applied to as a transfer.

Although I don't remember many people transferring in the mid 80s when I was in college, it does seem to be pretty common now. College is supposed to be four wonderful years of learning, both in terms of education and perhaps more importantly, learning about yourself. It shouldn't be spent somewhere that can't fully support that.

Apply ASAP. There are virtually no substantial transfer scholarships or financial aid btw.

Does your DS know where he wants to attend? Considering how late it is in the application process, I would do some preliminary fact finding in the schools that he is interested in. Is it too late for September admission? Does he want to come home and regroup for a January transfer? Good luck, this isn’t the end of the world. Allow/insist that he make these decisions.

Some schools are still wearing masks indoors [particularly on the East Coast] and those schools are just now dropping outdoor mask wearing on campus. Someone posted here a link to a Yale student's perspective where Yale has a snitch hotline to report students who were not making outside.

I am sorry your son had such a bad semester but he needs to know if he is applying to schools on the East/West Coast their COVID protocols are much more likely to be more stringent and last in the country to unmask.

He sounds like he has put a lot of thought into this, so Indo think transferring is the right thing for him. What he needs to do in the next few days is find the schools that interest him, contact the schools and find out the deadlines. Then move ASAP to make this happen. This needs to be a priority for him this week. Good luck to him. Hope you will update on his search.

COVID protocols absolutely affect school spirit and the mental health and wellness of students. Its why many Southern and Midwestern schools received record breaking applications this year and the prior year. Schools on either end of the coasts are more likely to still live in fear and less likely to provide a holistic college experience.
