They are already positioning themselves around Taiwan in aggressive provocative way.

China has nine times as much trade with auS and Europe as they do with Russia. They are risking all that to stand by Russia’s immoral land grab and emulate one of their own.

If they really want to usurp US in world dominance, they are doing the opposite - the world can see the stakes for allowing authoritarian regimes to take over - don’t care who gets hurt and international laws trampled on.

The US has modernization programs, testing & simulation programs, and rigorous maintenance programs for our most sophisticated weapons system: our nuclear arsenal.

The only reason we agreed to the test ban is we confidently knew we could keep that arsenal in working order without actually detonating our bombs.

While our programs are all classified, everyone knows we spend a lot on them and Congress oversees the programs. They work.

compare that with what we have seen from the Russians. Remember that parachute assault? Several Russian parachutes failed to open at all (which doesn’t matter; the Ukrainian villagers shot the rest on the way down or as they landed. All were killed - including their general).

Look at their trucks: the tires are flat and leaky half the time.

The “fuel issues?” It isn’t just supply. The oligarchs “cut” the fuel with water or cheaper flamables, and sold the extra gasoline to pay for London apartments and mega yachts.

We may have our issues here. But our issues are nothing compared to the Russian oligarchy / kleptocracy under Putin.

Interesting thanks. I would think 2 k is sufficient to do damage but if we have more operational ones that explains why now they are making false allegations of biological warfare in Ukraine. Their usual way of creating pretext for unjustified aggression. Shocking that China going along with these false allegations. What do they get out of this escalation?

The cost of maintaining nuclear weapons readiness is a hell of a lot higher than a tank or armored vehicle. If Russia was unable to keep their conventional forces combat ready no way can they afford to keep their nuclear arsenal maintained.

The US routinely looks at the old weapons and supposedly keeps them up to date. It's possible that some of them would fail - but it's more likely that they wouldn't launch.

During the Cold War, there were many stories at the time about near misses where faulty intelligence, misunderstandings, or miscommunication led to the order being given to launch, but the weapons officer failing to do so. (My father was a weapons officer and it was widely known that most of them would refuse to launch, given an order.) Recently, stories have come out about the same thing happening in Russia, that when given an order to launch, the order was not followed.
