Op, this is an older, but great article: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-johnny-name-colors/

Also, many people *think* their children know things they are really in the process of learning.

1.5-2 for English, still working on them in the non-dominant language at 2, though. But I don’t think it really matters if they know them for several years and I her numbers have come and gone since I first thought she “knew” them (currently we have something against three or four depending on what language we’re counting in).

DS knew all his colors before he could talk. If you asked him to get the blue boat in a tub of different color boats he could do it. All colors except green and brown - he is slightly color blind and can’t distinguish the difference. We knew when he was three and confirmed by pediatrician.

Seriously? It's common to say kids know their numbers and letters. Why do you have to be snotty about it?

My younger son is colorblind. He knew his primary colors from very young but always mixes up “blends”, will often incorrectly label orange or purple or pink or green or brown. It’s easy to casually test for if he knows letters or numbers, just show him pictures of colorblind plates on Google image search. My 3 year old and my (colorblind) father got the exact same answers on all 10 of the colorblind number plates. So…. No mystery for us!

Both of my sons are colorblind, which isn't surprising since my dad is colorblind and it's x-linked recessive so there was a 50/50 chance for each of them (I'm female).

I suspected but wasn't sure until they were around 4 because they are pretty good at telling apart red and green. It's the in between colors like orange/green/brown and certain shades of blue/purple/pink that trip them up. It really isn't a big deal.
