Our house in McLean is at a 45 degree angle from the street. And we love it. When it snows, we park at the bottom of the hill. But 360 days of 365 it's not a problem.

Not steep. I had a watermelon roll down my steep one once. Also would make for awesomely dangerous sledding if I vever actually let my kids do it.

I’ll answer the question, not related to the photo.

A steep driveway was a deal breaker for us. We have 3 young kids. I wasn’t comfortable with anything where they could accidentally roll/ride down a hill, and have it end in a hospital visit.

I had a driveway similar to that but a few feet longer. Everyone from friends to workmen, deliveries, housekeepers would park in the driveway blocking the other members in the family from getting out if the garage.

I think our driveway is steeper than that and we have no problems. I was going to say that an actually steep driveway can be kind of a nightmare with ice. Our neighbors have that. On the other hand, their kids have a great sledding hill.

Ice will be worse if the driveway doesnt get much sun (i.e. north facing) but if it gets decent sun it's much less of a problem.

We have a fairly steep driveway. It is sometomes challenging for elderly or pregnant women to get out of the car and close the car door while on the driveway.

We have a steep driveway and mostly like it. We’re on a hill higher than our neighbor and enjoy both the privacy and the view. No real cons except when both DH and I had to have surgeries at the same time and couldn’t manage the trash cans up and down. Shoveling ice/snow not fun but the sledding is great. For us the pros outweigh the cons, but there are some inconveniences.

My friend has a very steep driveway and her DD has driven up and through the garage door twice.


Ha! We had a steep driveway when I was growing up. The night that my sister got her license, she drove home, parked the car at the top of the driveway and forgot to set the parking brake! A neighbor called us to say the car was at the bottom of the hill with only my mom's beloved cherry tree preventing it from going into the road. Amazingly, my dad was totally calm. He just got up from dinner, called a tow truck and returned to the table.


That's a good story. It probably is a lot of what the OP is worried about. As for your sister, thank goodness the car hit the cherry tree!
