I take my subaru in for service at the dealership for $75.

FWIW, I did lease a MB at one point, but I knew the cost of ownership for such a car was going to be ridiculous, which is why I leased it as a "fun" car only for 3 years.

Agree. We have a Cayenne and the first oil change was nearly $1000. We switched to a dealer farther out, which was less expensive, and now take it to a local mechanic. But it's hard to find people wo will work on Porsches, maybe Mercedes is easier.

Find a specialized German car shop in your area.

No it doesn't. They cannot deny warranty unless they can show that maintenance was not done or was done improperly. You need to keep receipts showing the oil and filter used, along with date/mileage.

Funny, I came into this thread to complain that I have the same issue every time I bring in my audi for service. It costs so much to upkeep the darn car.

Always wondered how some folks who have the means to own a luxury vehicle like a Mercedes doesn’t have the expertise to Google "local Mercedes independent shop", scour the reviews, and give the top 3 shops a call and get quotes for an oil change.

It's the same reason that a Honda or a Toyota hold will their value better than an S class. Servicing German cars is insanely expensive relative to the actual work preformed.

Probably

This is 100% wrong. In the United States, manufactures cannot void warranties for work preformed by independent shops https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson–Moss_Warranty_Act If you don't use a dealer, make sure that you keep receipts so that you can prove that the recommended maintenance was preformed.

My question is where do you take your Mercedes cars for service? I don't mind paying but know there must be other less costly methods of keeping on top of service, with someone who knows this brand. I would appreciate your recommendations. I live in Montgomery County Maryland. TIA

$500 is a standard rate for checking everything, topping up fluids, changing the oil etc.. at a dealership for pretty much any non "value" car. Its trip off, Mercedes is a moon vehicle, I'd take it to your local mechanic but only of they do German cars, Lexus IS a souped up Toyota.

Long-time MB owner here. I usually change my own oil and it can cost about $70-100 just for supplies. It takes about 8 quarts of oil, and Mercedes has special requirements on approved oils - you need to check your user's manual. It's not particularly expensive, you just have to find the right one. Even at $30 for a 5-qt jug, it usually takes about two of those jugs for an oil change, plus another $10-20 for the filter. You cannot judge the cost of an MB oil change by comparing it to a Honda or Lexus. I also change the oil myself on our Honda Odyssey, and the oil+filter ends up being about $35 there.

Add in labor, I'd regard $100-$120 as a fair price for an MB oil change if you take it to an independent shop.

Regarding the price you were quoted from the dealer, this sounds higher than normal. I usually pay $300 for the A service on a 4-cylinder MB when I can't find the time to do my own. Call back and ask for the price of the service with just the required items - tell them you are not interested in any of the recommended items. See what the new price comes to be. You can then call around independent MB shops and see what they quote you for the A service.

Owned a few MB’s and couldn’t have said it any better.

You don't use synthetic.

Synthetic isn’t expensive any more.

Buy American if you want cheap service.
