Grunting helps because it relieves intraabdominal pressure when doing heavy lifts. It helps prevent injury. Spoken like someone who doesn't even lift or who lifts puny weights.

My rules are:
1. Break down the damn weights. Every time. If you take more than 2 minutes between sets, tough ish, break 'em down and do it again for your next set. Men, I'm looking at you.
2. Don't grunt like you're some wild animal. It doesn't help you lift more, you just look like an arse.
3. wipe the machines.
4. Mind your own damn business.

Stop worrying about people scrolling on their phones while they're doing sets.

You need to rest appropriately between sets if you're lifting heavy. You want to make sure you're focused on doing reps with good form rather than trying to get a cardio workout, which is why you need rest. It may take me 15+ minutes to do 4 sets while doing squats. MYOB.

Stop using the power/squat rack for stupid arm curls.

STOP- using equipment to hold your water bottle, hoodie you took off, phone...

Hate when people are doing bicep curls and use a bench just to hold their crap. Put it on the floor.

STOP- standing directly in front of dumbbell doing curls, shoulder shrugs or whatever. Stand back far enough that others can get in there to grab weights.

Nope. I am not going to walk away while I take a break. If someone really want to work in they can ask but if I walk away someone else will come in and use it for the next 10-15 min.

And if you lift heavy enough you should need a break between set.

FWIW I do time my breaks so i don't stay there for 10 min but 2-3 min is normal for me between sets.

- STOP taking cell phone calls at the gym. A quick 30 second appointment confirmation call? That's fine. A long conversation? Take your call, but walk away and take it outside or in the lobby. Or call them back later. Don't be rude to those around you -- we can hear your conversation even with the volume all the way up on our earbuds.

- STOP leaving your hairballs or shedding everywhere. Jesus, just find a trash can.

- STOP leaving your trash on the machines. Wipes, wrappers, masks... it's nasty. Toddlers shouldn't be at the gym. Adults pick up after themselves.

I'm astounded at the people who don't understand these very basic, very reasonable matters of courtesy.
Agreed. Great post. I ended up with a home Bowflex which while a full gym.

+2. Agree, OP. People are rude and disgusting.

And the talking on the phone puts me on full tilt. JFC, put the damn thing down for an hour. And no one wants to here your personal conversations. If you do this, you are a first-class A-hole.

LOL, yes, why is this specific to the gym?

OP here. Because it all happened in an hour. Went to choose a treadmill, and someone left their trash in it. I removed it because I'm a decent human being. 10 minutes later a woman doused on perfume goes on the treadmill next to me. I got up and moved to a different machine. A few minutes later, a man 3 treadmills away took a phonecall and was so damn loud even through my alternative and grunge 90s mix at max volume.

Then in the locker room, someone took all the hair from their brush or fingers or whatever and left it on a tangled tumbleweed on the flood. It was gross.

Yes people should STOP doing these things everywhere, but goddamn has being a moderately considerate adult gone out the window. And it happens in all locations of my gym chain (OneLife).

I wish you would be moderately considerate with your language

If there is trash on or in the equipment - I pick it up and throw it on the floor. I pay to work out - they dont pay me to clean.

I go to the Y and see none of this. Maybe an occasional paper towel on the ground, but rare. Locker rooms are super clean and people wipe down machines and dispose of their trash.
