I live in Shaw, and I realize that’s probably too close to the WH and Capitol. We have a car and can leave on short notice, and we’re thinking about making preps to do that now.
How far away from DC would be safe from a nuclear bomb? Are we taking like a few miles, like silver spring, or dozens of miles, like Gaithersburg or somewhere in Virginia. Would like to stay in MD if possible.
There's not going to be a nuclear war, idiot
grave of the fireflies is a tear jerker! I grew up in the NW—tons of military bases there so the threat was very real to us. Basically, they would try to cripple bases and ports, along with fuel storage and potentially food storage locations, and transportation hubs. You might be ok in the middle—but for how long if goods can’t come and go?Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I'd rather live at the epicenter at this point.
+1
You only have to watch Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen once to know the only tolerable options are to be close enough you never know what hit you, or far enough away you don’t need to run.

We closed on our house near the Capitol on Sept. 10, 2001.
I panicked a little the next day.

I figured back then I would have 5 minutes ish to get into a basement or the center of a tall building. Looked like greatest possibility would be for radiation to blow east or northeast. Seems logical because weather normally moves in that direction. I think you're supposed to stay bunkered 2 days. Not certain on number of days
There are targets all around here outside of the beltway

I grew up here and we never bothered with those “duck and cover” drills in school. We knew we were toast if the Soviets launched against DC.
This. My dad alwyas said he knew it would be coming when the cia neighbors left to their bunker though.
