Yes, obviously. But many breeders have programs where you don’t bring them home until they’re three or four months old and they’re already potty trained, and have a basic commands like sit, stay, come, etc.

You should just wait a few more months for the next litter. It's really not good to leave your puppy after such a short time with you.

Sure. But it’s more owner consistency That takes years. Board and train is always helpful in my experience. Dogs learn quickly. Of course I was lucky to find excellent trainers. Drove all the way to Culpepper for them! Blue ridge canine.

I did board and train mine it was fine.

Or ask the person you got him from for help. You pay of course.

We are first time puppy owners too. I would say don't plan any trips for at least 3 months and longer if possible. They really are like a baby and routine seems to be key--and it takes time to get them into a routine once potty training is established. 6 months in and I now feel like I somewhat have an established schedule. I am already concerned about our summer vacation and how long we're planning to be away. The trip was purchased pre-puppy and so we have to go, but I already dread it. As others have recommended, avoid getting the puppy until after your trip if at all possible.


Ugh I keep missing the window. What's your puppy breed?

We are first time puppy owners too. I would say don't plan any trips for at least 3 months and longer if possible. They really are like a baby and routine seems to be key--and it takes time to get them into a routine once potty training is established. 6 months in and I now feel like I somewhat have an established schedule. I’d wait 6 months and even then you need a full time sitter.

Do not pick up the puppy.

Ask the breeder to keep it until you return from your trip. How long will you be gone?

Definitely don’t leave a puppy. Doesn’t matter if it’s an at home sitter or boarding, don’t get a puppy then leave it. Contact your breeder.

Don’t pick up the puppy in the first place. Start boarding right away and meet the dog when you get back. Only works if your breeder agrees, obviously.

How long is your trip? Can you get a friend or great dog sitter to stay with the puppy? Just make sure it it is someone who’s will suppoet and practice whatever training you’ve got in place for potty training, positive crate time, etc.

They haven't offered. We haven't committed yet.


Ask the breeder if you can pay them a fee to keep the dog for an extra month for you.
