Excellent or outstanding is something that does not happen in the high school walls. Anything happening within the four walls of high school is maximum average but more likely a 2

DS actually is at Harvard with absolutely no hooks and Student Body President. Top stats but everyone at Harvard has top stats.
Congrats! But was student body president considered to be a-f-ing-mazing? Or was it perfectly fine and in line with other qualifications?
To me, excellent ECs can compensate a bit for a 45th percentile SAT or that B- in Calc. Does student body president do that? Or does it just show a consistently strong student?

Student body presidents at St. Albans and GDS this year both just got into Harvard.
Harvard likes leaders.

Unless you are hooked or rich/networked. Then these things are gold.

Regional or National level ECs. Published research. Really big deal stuff that impacts much more than one high school.
One example: the local Girl Scout Council is the largest in the country, with nearly 60,000 members. It is the entire DMV area, plus deeper into MD, VA and parts of WV. There are, I think, 2 student positions on the board. There is an extensive application and interview process.
So for Ivies, the Girl Scout Gold Award would be average, the Gold Award plus a year of service on the GSCNC board of directors would be excellent.

I would characterize a kid who had a lot of the ones mentioned as good rather than average. I don’t think average or good matters much snd it makes a difference if there’s a deficiency or you’re in the “great” category.
