We never found out the sex with our 3 and loved it. The anticipation is insane. We are not super religious like someone said upthread. If you’re okay with either gender, then enjoy the surprise. For each baby I had a few gender neutral outfits in newborn and 3 months and then went shopping when the baby was born. For the 3rd baby we already had both genders. I had boxes waiting in the attic to see what the baby was.

No judgement on people who find out the sex and name babies before birth- but I’m not that person.

It is unexpected.

I can not wear a seatbelt and unexpectedly get in accident.
I can not give my dog his tick medication and he can unexpectedly get a tick.
I can not latch my screen door and unexpectedly have a raccoon come in.
I can not not wear sunscreen an unexpectedly get skin cancer.

There is a difference between not taking all available precautions to prevent something from happening and expecting that thing to happen.

That’s exceedingly rare. Was yours an ectopic pregnancy? Typically if you get pregnant w an IUD it is not viable pregnancy.

No. They aren't sure if the embryo pushed the IUD out, or it wasn't placed well. But it happened. It was a hell of a surprise.

Once that was over, my husband did get a vasectomy, but let's not pretend that BC is 100%.

I don’t think anyone thinks BC is 100%. Nothings 100% at preventing pregnancy except abstinence. Even vasectomy has a failure rate. But fewer than 1% of people w IUDs get pregnant. So it’s still exceedingly rare. Most of the time when posters say they had an unexpected pregnancy they actually mean they weren’t being that careful/weren’t using BC appropriately.

Well, even that doesn’t work sometimes.

I had a friend in college who was “saving herself for marriage.” She and her boyfriend were basically just grinding against each other while naked and, guess what? She found out that you can get pregnant without ever having actual intercourse! She ended up having an abortion and never even telling the boyfriend about the pregnancy, but it was a huge, and surprising, topic of conversation at our sorority for a long time. Who knew?!

She and the rest of us were much more cautious after that, haha. I often wonder if her story is to this day being passed down at our midwestern sorority.

I think it's great to keep the sex a surprise, OP. The only reason not to is if it would help you prepare, e.g., you have a boy and a girl and want to know what hand me downs to keep. We didn't find out the sex for our first two (G,B) but did with the third for reasons like that. I also wanted a different experience of finding out in advance.

And, not knowing the sex beforehand is so fun! My nurses in L&D got such a kick out of it. Everyone and their mother will share their opinions about the baby's sex ("oh, you MUST be having a boy") but whatever. The fun outweighs the annoyance.

We did it the opposite way. Didn't find out with our first, but did with the second.

There was a YouTube thing where a couple got pregnant 10 years after her husband had a vasectomy. It’s rare but it can happen.

Yeah and what’s more likely? That someone using BC properly becomes the 1/1,000+ people to get pregnant after a partners vasectomy or that they’re saying the pregnancy is unexpected when actually they just had unprotected sex when they thought they were outside the “fertile window” and that didn’t work out?
