Thanks for this thread! My 17 month old is really tall, and I wish I could use the baby set with a lower setting for the seat. It only works with the seat in highest spot. Maddening that I can't still use the straps without the rest of the plastic apparatus. To the poster who cut the lower strap free with a saw, is that solution still working? (I bought my Tripp Trapp in 2022)

I think you’re basically stuck with the tray or going through the transition to nothing.

I know this wasn’t the question, but PSA: you can put the two pieces of the baby seat, straps attached, in the dishwasher. Just wrap the straps around so they don’t hang down and don’t use heated dry. I know you can just wash it in the sink but this works great if you don’t have time and it’s coated in pasta sauce or whatever.

I am having this same problem. The babyset harness absolutely does not detach from it, and Stokke doesn’t sell a separate harness. So basically if you’re in the US and have a 2021 or later model, once you outgrow the baby set you are screwed. We’re more just sit our 20 month old in the chair without the babyset and it’s fine from a safety perspective, but she relentlessly gets up and down during meals which is super annoying. I do not understand why Stokke made this choice.

Wow so my husband cut off with the saw the baby set and we just kept the buckle on the bottom clipped to the chair. It works great so far.

As to how you install it, you tie it around the back/ through the slot on the seat as best you can and done.

Nope, mine was bought in 2021. I was confused by what I read online which is why I emailed them like you. You’ll be fine with buying that harness. The bottom part of the baby set on the seat was really hard to get off it I used a screwdriver to pry it out. I wanted the harness so my kid couldn’t escape.



Hi there, I'm in the same dilemma with OP and haven't found a solution. Would you mind sharing picture of how you attached the current stokke 5 pt harness (https://www.stokke.com/en-qa/accessories/tripp-trapp-accessories/1005.html) to the chair? Idk which version I have since the harness came with the baby set and like OP, I'd like to use it without the baby rail but WITH the harness... Thank you in advance for your help.

I'm so confused by this. I have an older trip trap, and we absolutely used the harness without the baby seat. It had the back rest part, but not the seat. I don't think we used a hack. It worked really well, I'm surprised this isnt part of the design

OP here - I forgot about this thread! We ended up playing around with getting him out. If we stood behind him and lifted him out, he came out just fine! So we switched to doing that (we had been standing in front of him and lifting him out). He’s been happily in with his baby set and harness ever since. He’s a few months shy of 3 now.

My two year old is really tall and we have no problem lifting her in and out of the baby set. I’m confused about how shin bruises can happen. We don’t use the harness.


So I can’t help but I wanted to offer my best tip - you can put the whole plastic baby set, harness attached, in the dishwasher. Just make sure the straps are wrapped around something so they don’t dangle and I don’t use heated dry. I’ve been doing this for years now so I feel confident it won’t mess anything up.

Unfortunately, the separate harness isn’t available on the US website anymore. Looks like they still sell in the UK and possibly other European sites. This should be compatible with the US version of the chair—chair is the same as the UK but the accessories are the only difference. In the US they have to sell the infant seat and harness together. Very frustrating.

I'm concerned they changed the harness then. Or maybe they used to sell two? Doesn't seem possible that a harness would be both usable with the baby set (which this one clearly is) and usable independently with how the connections are designed. But maybe I'm missing something.

We bought both our Stokkes used (a few years apart). Both worked fine with just the harness once we were done with the baby set. Something must have changed, which is concerning, since I recommend this highchair all the time. I agree that it's nice to have the harness to keep my almost 2yo contained. He'd be done with dinner after two bites if he could get down on his own.

Interesting! My kid isn't that big, but has long legs. He's 75% for height and 24 months. We can get him in super easily but we are scraping his shins getting him out. He's getting little bruises and he hates it. Is there a better way to do this? There's plenty of room when he's in there and the harness isn't the problem, it's getting his legs out of the holes. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong?


Hmm I can see how this might happen and I’m trying to think what we did, can he kind of stand up a little before you pull him out? So his legs are more straight versus picking up from sitting? Sorry by the time my son finished he was getting himself in and out using this kind of bizarre way haha so I can’t remember exactly

We never used it as a highchair / had a harness, but my kid has been using it fine since he turned 2. He's fallen out a couple times, but no injuries and nothing worse than all his other falls (walking / getting off sofa / general existing as a 2 yo)

He does not always stay put but that's something we work on with motivators / timers / games etc. Sometimes I wish I could just strap him down but I figure you have to go through this transition at somepoint to teach them to sit at the table for some age appropriate amount of time.

The one I bought separately from the site is two pieces. Pic on website doesn’t show it well. The shoulder part and the part that goes between their legs and attaches to seat.
