He invested in a town that had a small-town feel and rural vibe. This development detracts from that, regardless of the virtues of “affordable housing” - putting quotes since it doesn’t sound like the housing is all that affordable to locals.

Anyhow, I get where Chappelle is coming from. If you moved to an area or neighborhood and bought a home and invested in the area and then a massive cookie cutter development threatened to detract from your investment, you’d be pissed too. For those of you living in Bethesda or Potomac or McLean, etc your neighborhood civic associations do this all the time. In this one particular instance, I’m team Chapelle.

I have to admit - I was a Dave Chapelle fan prior to hearing about this.

As a public figure, his opinion of something definitely will draw attention on a specific issue & I think he dropped the ball on this one.

I personally think public/affordable housing is an important step toward solving the homeless issue.
I have never understood the “not in my backyard”-type of people.

I feel that every citizen has a right to shelter > that shelter is not just for the privileged.
I am sure Dave has friends in the industry who grew up in low-income housing.
Jay Z for example. Or Fat Joe.

NIMBY's have no power beyond their own perceived sense of entitlement while they exercise their privilege, stomp their feet, start petitions, harass public officials etc. He has skin in the game and the power to make them change their minds.

Adding... these type of business development projects happen all the time with conditions, all over the place. The only difference is he chose to go testify publicly. He could have submitted a statement, probably call any of the council members, etc. You can keep your interpretation of NIMBY, no one really cares. But what he actually is, is a business person who has committed to making investments in the community, has probably always been clear about his vision and conditions, and maybe they decided to move in another direction. He could have done all of it behind closed doors, this is just a publicity stunt.

He has every right to pull his investments if it no longer seems proftable or fits with hs vision. The town can do whatever they want. He is one (very rich) person.
