Exactly. Look, I’m all for pleasing my husband, and I love doing it often. But the stupidity of thinking that the only way to have a great sex life is to give up your career, or that you need to give up having a voice in the relationship to make someone happy, is just beyond. Books like this teach cult thinking — the idea that sacrificing parts of your self is going to make you happy can only be sold to the very insecure and desperate.

Yup, as an immigrant this is what I find very hard to understand in US. Everything is liberals vs conservatives or dems vs reps. All is black or white, no nuances. Both sides can have something good to bring at the table


I wonder how much our political system has created this in the rest of our discourse. We’ve landed in a two-party only system, so everything (and everyone!) is supposed to be one one side or the other politically. Countries with multiple parties in a parliament have shifting alliances and coalitions. I think that allowed for a greater understanding of compromise and nuance, more “give-and-take” in daily life.

Or, you can learn to set and maintain healthy boundaries + cultivate an emotional connection, rather than being manipulative. It's more effective and emotionally healthy. Why someone would want constant power plays in your relationship is beyond me.
