I have kids at Sligo and Einstein and I think both are great. Administration is strong at Sligo, teachers and atmosphere is great at both schools. I know the county has been slow to recover math scores since Covid so they’ve added levels of math I think throughout MCPS. Still, my kid and his friends did well in math and are on track for algebra in 7th or 8th. If your kid does well in elementary they will do great at Sligo. It’s a friendly and welcoming school. Both Sligo and Einstein have great music programs and opportunities for high achieving kids.

Curious about updated thoughts on Sligo. I know people are dismissive of test scores but <20% proficiency in math is really concerning. How do parents with children there understand those numbers? It seems like there's a high chance my children could fall below grade level in core subjects when they enter middle school, which is making me quite nervous.

I feel the same way with lack of homework, but I think it will be fine. I've just told her, it's going to be more rigorous in high school, buckle up.

I went to an elite, extremely competitive private school growing up. I had TONS of studying to do in middle school. And high school. I mean, it prepared me for a top college and I did great, but I'm not sure it was necessary. My middle schooler in contrast has been able to devote hours during the week to a sport she loves and I think she gets a lot more value out of that vs. hours of homework and studying. Through that, she knows what it means to have to prepare and focus, and be disciplined, so I think she has the tools to apply that to studying next year.

My kid likes Sligo but rarely seems to have homework. She's in 8th so I am a bit worried about whether she will be prepared for high school. She has made some good friends so I'm thankful for that.

If you think that’s a lot you should imagine what it costs to get into a good school.

Einstein has been great for my kids. The IB program is rigorous, and by junior year, they take most classes with other IB kids who are highly motivated. So far this year, there have been some very nice college acceptances in this group. Unlike some of the larger schools in the area, it is not terribly difficult to make a sports team, so that opens up a lot of opportunities for kids who want to participate, but are not travel level athletes. Those who get involved in all the activities the school has to offer seem to have a really good high school experience there. Any criticisms that I may have are on the MCPS level and not with the school itself.
