Smart kid/smart family. Assuming they truly are what they claim to be, they were smart enough to take advantage of this opportunity. Assuming they lied, well, they were smart enough to game a stupid, immoral system.

As an aside, while I get and appreciate the need to provide these admission benefits to Native Americans of the United States, why should anything at all be done for those of Mexican heritage? Enlighten me please..

My son checked the Hispanic box despite the fact our household does not have any Spanish speakers. My mom is 100% Hispanic (born and raised in Cuba), so meets the definition by SAT standards. That was enough for us. He also got into an Ivy. No regrets as this is how the game is played.

Exactly. When a school is bragging about the number of Native Americans, most people don't think they mean the Big 3 student with multiple homes and horses who has never suffered a whiff of adversity or discrimination. But eventually that student will actually prove themself in the workforce or graduate school. This will eventually catch up to them.

NP here. OMG. The OP said that Mexicans have a mix of Native American blood from all over Americas. There are still tribes within Mexico who speak a Mayan language, similar to other tribes in Central America. Do you think the Mayans cared about the current Mexican borders and reproduced strictly 1 mile from the border? Their civilization pretty much covered all Central America's NW, from Mexico to Nicaragua. This is elementary school material in FFX.

What is wrong is that there is any incentive to check a box.

Incentive is there because the colleges want to say how many minorities they accepted. And this kid is stealing someone’s spot. It saddens me to think that college admission has become a game which is won by cheating and lying. And the colleges are not actually admitting any deserving minorities.

I knew Geronimo Martinez was lying when he applied ED.

It's frustrating but a good sign that life isn't always fair and that this process has very little integrity to it. Better to carry yourself with dignity and only worry about yourself. How is this racism? The kid is a regular kid. Not stellar. If colleges believe whatever is put down on the application and admit kids based on race then they are the ones practicing racism. If by admitting this kid they checked off that they admitted a native american or mexican kid when obviously they didn’t, then how does it benefit anyone except the kid who lied? The true Native American and hispanic didn’t get admitted but this kid stole their spot.
