Oh. I forgot to add in sci fi. Second the Star Trek TNG and Voyager recs. Deep Space Nine is truly the best one. It develops a story arc about 1/3 of the way through to the end of the show.
Battlestar Galactica may be verging on too violent, but it is a phenomenal show.
Babylon 5. Hands down the most well thought out show I have ever seen.





I agree with Battlestar Galactica. I’d also try the Marvel series on Disney plus like Loki.

My wife has the same issue and so it's hard sometimes for me to find our next TV show. Some that fit the bill that we liked:

Numb3rs
Mentalist (a little bit more gore than others, but still pretty good)
Stargate Universe (if you can tolerate SG-1 and Atlantis, which we did)
Eureka is really good
Warehouse-13
The Librarians
Dollhouse
The West Wing
The Newsroom
Leverage and Leverage Redemption
Farscape

and we are currently in the middle of Perception
