But that’s not how it’s structured. It’s not saying some of your classmates have challenges you don’t, be grateful for what you have. Instead it seems intent on tearing kids down. Have two parents? You’re privileged. Have your own bedroom? You’re privileged. Straight? You’re privileged. Being privileged is clearly not considered a good thing. The takeaway won’t be about gratitude. It’s will be that being privileged is bad. So by extension, being raised by two married parents is bad. Being straight is bad. Being white is bad. Being able-bodied is bad.

It’s like the old lesson that you don’t build someone up by tearing down others has been tossed out the window. The whole focus is on tearing down people perceived as “privileged”. That will not lead to good outcomes.

But wouldn't you agree that it's your job as a parent to teach them empathy and gratitude? I do. My job as a parent is to turn my children into good people. It is the job of the school to teach them english, math, and so on.

+1 the issue is that, between the 2020 and 2021 closures, and the continual retooling of the curriculum, and the behavioral issues, and everything else, the kids aren’t getting a decent education and learning what they need to learn. And they’re wasting time on stuff like this.

Luckily this is not from some random school in another state. According to the article, it’s from Oakton HS, so maybe someone will come along and confirm.

The squares are things that we used to say children should be thankful for, or that families should aspire to for their children.

But that’s not allowed any more, and instead these ridiculous consultants filter everything through an equity lens, so that children are constantly made to feel ashamed, not thankful, if they “enjoy privilege” or compensated with victimhood points if they don’t.

It’s a road to nowhere, but it’s easier to teach than grammar and it also lets the teachers off the hook when they still have achievement gaps. FCPS should be in receivership at this point, with its current management fired immediately.

I think these kind of lessons have unintended consequences due to the audience being young people. Kids now perceive themselves as less than? Or other kids think they or their parents didn’t earn and work hard for what they have? And the categories are just horrible. Probably a peer review could have gone a long way.

I think many of these ‘privileges’ are just outcomes of hard work. We should be focusing on hard work that can create these outcomes, not privileges.

Some are not as a result of hard work. You don’t work to be able bodied or white or male, which is the core problem most have with the lesson and CRT as a whole. Unless you go through the nuance and minutia that make up these supposed privileges, which could be hours of lessons, kids may be getting the wrong idea. And that’s even assuming that even those deeper conversations and lessons have any merit at all.
