This is why so many PPs are complaining about smell. First off, in one-two more generations people won't smoke as much weed as we do now. Second, it's only legal to do in a private residence. So if you smell it in the garage of a building, then those people are doing it illegally. Lastly, and most importantly, is that by keeping it illegal you are punishing poor people who are usually POC. Yes we have medical marijuana but you have to almost lie to the doctor to get it, and it's expensive to get a license. It's about $300 the first year (with a registration fee) and to renew is $150.

Just because YOU don't want it legal doesn't mean it's best for society.

Decriminalization has made it more accessible to people under 21. And there is increased use in that age group. It is 100% illegal use by definition and it's driving an illegal drug trade. Which in Montgomery county at least is directly related to many of the murders.

So legalizing won't get rid of the bad impacts of it. It might even increase them.

Yes, I know Maryland has a Republican Governor and isn’t the most progressive of all blue states, but marijuana legalization is hardly a radical position anymore. It’s uncharacteristically reactionary to be against it. So what’s the hold up? Who actually opposes legalization in Annapolis?

I am a liberal Democrat and I am against legalizing it. Marijuana is linked to many long-term health issues that have not been adequately studied. MD should not legalize.

In 5 years when the average Millennial is 40 with kid(s), the politics are going to abruptly change from “legalize it” to “keep that sh*t away from my kids”.

It happened with the Boomers, who went from “tune in, turn on and drop out” in the 70s to “just say no” in the 80s and “D.A.R.E.” in the 90s. It will also happen with Millennials.

Are you a Millennial? My guess is no.

The war on drugs has been a colossal failure. It isn’t just “potheads and addicts,” to quote another PP, who support legalization.

But many people in this area definitely have a vested interest in keeping that drug war alive. It’s a huge jobs program for federal, state and local governments.

Decriminalization and legalization are different things. Decriminalization is widely popular here in MD. Legalization is not so popular here in MD and as we can watch the experience of other states we can see the negative social outcomes of full legalization.

I’m guessing that you are a Millennial without kids. Cool conspiracy theory. Stay stoned bro 😎

All of your assumptions are incorrect and show how you have no capacity for nuanced thinking.

I don’t smoke or ingest any weed, but it’s very telling that you think people who don’t use wouldn’t support legalization.

Not a Millennial and I do have kids.

It’s not a conspiracy theory at all. Try reading up on it.

You think that my opposition to full legalization in MD is due to a “vested interest to keep the drug war alive”? LOL.

Not you, you potato. Do you always think everything applies directly to you?

But, if you think there aren't many organizations and individuals who don't have a vested interest in it, you're kidding yourself.

Look at all the podunk police departments who post photos of their "drug busts" on their FB page. One or two bricks of marijuana and they act like they caught the Pablo Escobar of pot. But if they didn't do that, they'd have fewer officers in the department. and most of the officers they lack skills to do anything else.

Do we need a gigantic DEA? No, but conservatives especially love to point to bloated orgs like these as proof that the government is doing something effective.

And before you bring up busts of giant heroin and coke rings, etc., that's a different conversation altogether. We're talking about pot.

I wonder how long it’s going to take for a reckoning about weed? I am going to guess that we will start to see pull back within the next couple years from the current free for all situation. More regulation. More enforcement. And rightly so.

It’s totally disgusting. I hate it too. Can the government do something to prevent drug use but also not penalize them with jail time? Is there no other solution? I don’t want a society of pot heads & addicts.

I’m curious: What’s your stance on alcohol?
