The title of this thread is somewhat misleading. She called 911 on herself. However her mental illness was working her over, something inside her did cause her to call for help.

This is absolutely horrifying, which goes without saying. I hope that the kids will recover as fully as possible and, in the future, be happy and successful.

Parents are at their breaking points, especially with COVID. I am seeing it with everyone around me in all different settings - from rural to urban friends. These are awful stories and so incredibly tragic. I feel for everyone involved. The parents don't need judgment - they need (and needed, prior to this) support from the state and compassion from others.

I’m a live-in family. I’ve lived with several kids, and as a childcare professional, I can sometimes offer advice that parents haven’t considered.

Because there's plenty of stuff on here that has nothing (or very little) to do with kids (restaurants, real estate, job advice, etc.). Google these things and you might end up here. And there are very few anonymous forums that allow you to discuss a wide range of topics like DCUM does. I was on here for years before I had kids.

I also thought it was helpful in finding out more about what it's like to raise kids in the DMV, which helped me decide if I even wanted to have kids at all (turns out that, yes, I did want to have them, but no, I did not want to raise them in the DC area-- and I grew up there, so I'm not putting it down, but it's different now than it was).

This is the part you keep missing. I feel bad for the mothers AND the kids. It is our society that’s creating these conditions that push people to their breaking points. Here’s a simple way to improve: universal health care. I imagine you’re against this and other measures to improve lives. As long as people are weighing the cost of getting help or buying food they’re going to self treat —and the results will continue to be tragic.

Desperate people do desperate things. There’s nothing you or anyone can do to change this reality.

Expanding access to services would also help

And the kids will eventually stab somebody because they will be dumped in foster care, their case worker will never follow up and they will never get the right therapy.

We don’t care for the weakest of our society and we wonder why.
