I am not the PP. However, UTampa has a reputation of being something slightly above a for-profit diploma mill. mostly out of state students, there for the party atmosphere and location. Its peers are places like Kutztown and Salisbury State.

University of South Florida is a real university on par with a place like UW-Tacoma and Colorado State-Pueblo. It is also cheaper than UTampa.


USF is miles above the two schools you named. According to USNews, its peers are schools like Arizona State, UT-Knoxville, and U of Oregon.

Check out USF, too - esp the St Pete campus - while you're visiting. Stunning, stunning location.


St Pete campus is in fact gorgeous, but undergrads rarely have anything to do with it. It's mainly marine science research - they teach their classes on the Tampa campus.

I don't know much about UT, but USF is a good school, despite its low name recognition. It is a major research university with top-notch professors. Many of the students are local and/or first in their family to go to college, but bright and hard-working. The university is very ambitious and has been investing in itself wisely for some time now (both in student amenities - it used to be a 'commuter college' and they're worked hard to change it - new dorms, student union, etc - and in its teaching and research programs). Highly recommended if you're looking for an undergrad program in Florida.


To add...there's not a lot of off-campus life at either place. USF is in the 'burbs, and UT is downtown (which is...bleh). Worth a visit to either to make sure the atmosphere is what your DC wants.

I'm the PP from Florida and I wasn't trolling. I only commented because I literally had the "you mean USF" conversation last week. I genuinely know nothing about UTampa so I can't be helpful.

Yup. They overenrolled last year and the started unenrolling students for random reasons and yanking freshman housing trying to correct their own error. Hundreds of freshman were left scrambling to find apartments in Tampa in the weeks before class started.
