So not true.
This is a myth.
They have a high school learning specialist for a reason. GDS has all sorts of kids.

Physical activity is optional at GDS US? I am deeply skeptical of this statement.

PE is NOT optional at GDS.

It is called PE but you literally don’t have to do anything. You can lie for an hour on a yoga mat if you want

I think the question is where he’d be happy as an artsy non athlete. I think he’d be ok at both academically w the right classes but socially is where you gave to choose carefully.

Don’t underestimate the benefits of no sports requirement, especially if you kid isn’t athletic. It gives your kids a lot of extra time to fill with other activities and makes the heavy homework load a lot more manageable. My kid has a sports requirement a Big3 and had an injury last season. No sports resulted in A LOT better grades.

Good we all agree. PE and sports are easy to avoid at GdS, whether you do some other substitute or skip it all entirely.

Yes it’s correct. On our US tour they said you can skip all require PE classes and do yoga or stretching. We even walked by one such class in the weight room. They were just sitting in the floor chatting.

That’s not “optional”. They require you take PE and participate in sports with alternative options. Some alternatives may be less strenuous than others but that’s a far cry from “optional”.

I’m also curious when you had this tour? Must’ve been years ago.

This just isn’t true. After 9th grade there is no PE or sports requirement at GDS. Field requires participation in sports all four years. GDS was the only school we looked at in DC that has no such requirement after 9th. They also have a great jazz band.

2017. And the alt options were stretching or weight training. Plus 18 weeks (9 twice) of PE is Sex Ed at GDS.
So yeah, if you’re uncoordinated or want to avoid learning or doing any sports, might be a good fit.

Not sure how they handle middle school intramurals; I’d imagine it’s all voluntary not mandatory as in the other schools.

St Andrew’s has a fantastic jazz band and they have their research center for learning. They are known for being a good school for ADHD and anyone else needing learning accommodations because of their research center.

If Northern Virginia is an option, I highly recommend looking at Commonwealth Academy in Alexandria. They will specifically focus on executive functioning skills and supports for students with ADHD.

Have you looked at Field?
