Just to clarify, you closed on a $3 million dollar home and are upset a RE agent didn't give you a $100 gift?

Sister is a very successful broker in NY, said it is very commonplace to give a gift of some sort. Could be a gift certificate, case or bottle of wine, gift basket, something personalizes...obviously the more expensive, the gift might follow in terms of price point. She has done this for over 20 years and said she has never NOT given a gift of some sort. It builds good relationships and though not necessary, it is a nice practice.

We got a beautiful John Boos cutting board from our realtor when we bought a $350,000 home so I’d definitely expect something for $3 million.

We used Redfin. They don't give gifts, but you get a nice refund on the commission. That's the gift.

Our house was about 1M. I seem to remember given a choice of a home warranty or cash back or something. They said they did something standard like that for everyone. We chose the credit. I certainly didn’t expect anything from the realtor and never thought about this again until right now.

Meh. Closed on third house of lifetime in May of this year. No gifts for first two houses. Our realtor from May just dropped a Christmas gift basket, she said she likes to do it after people settle in. It's mostly clutter / odd items from local boutiques that we will never use. It was a nice gesture but definitely not necessary. She was fantastic in so many ways and that's what I'm going to remember, not all the handmade artisanal soap.

This is fascinating. Have seen both threads. I have worked with a duo team for six or seven deals over the past 20 years. Never got a gift and never expected one, so do not feel slighted in the least.

I think I will ask a neighbor who is a realtor what she knows of this practice.

A realtor in my office does this with a donation to Children's Hospital. He gives Children's a puny $5 but they still send a nice letter to the client thanking them for the gift made by the realtor without mentioning the denomination. I find it despicable.
