If you're looking at a California Closet type system it is 20k minimum for ONE closet.

Yeah you could do IKEA but you have to put it together yourself and do the work to make it look custom.

We did one of our large closets (size of a small bedroom) with on-sale Elfa, and I think that it was about $5k. A lot of open shelving plus some drawers and shoe shelves. Also, it didn’t have an island. I remember asking someone about an island and getting an off-the-top of their head price quote of about $5-7k.

+1 to the comment that walk-in closets can essentially be the equivalent of a kitchen project without appliances.

We have a John Louis closet system in our master bedroom walk-in closet. Maybe a mid range between expensive cabinets and ELFA as it is wood.

It was for one closet but it's huge with a lot of built-ins. More than large enough for both DH and my stuff.

lol, yes, and I love it. Once, in August, of course when we had company, our main floor A/C unit went out. We put our 2 girls on an airmattress in my closet and our son on an airmattress in my husband's closet, and gave our guests their rooms (my sister and her husband in one kids room, their children, my nieces, in the other kids room). Fortunately the A/C was fixed withing 2 days


I am OP, the "hers" closet looks kinda like this photo (except the room is bigger so there is more space surrounding the island), but for materials and installation, it's very similar to this closet in the photo, the "his" closet is similar but no island. Realistically, how much should they cost?

We had a similar closet built by California Closets, with an island with drawers on each side, but much larger. We upgraded the materials to their high-gloss finish to go with our contemporary decor. It was $23K. But they're super expensive. Closet Stretchers may be less.

That's very different than the $1500 comment. Realistically, in the area, 2 of those closets (one with island, one without island) cost 20k+? For real? Those are not elaborate closets with glass door cabinetry or anything like that. Well, if you are right, then I feel much better about the price quote I got.

Why would you want to cheap out on this? The millwork in the closet rooms should be nice enough to match the house. It doesn’t make sense to have a huge house with bedrooms-as-closets and then have cheap particle board in there.

We didn’t add one, but had it in design of house, roughly 400 sf on first level and then 220 sf on second level. DH built the custom cabinets. But the quote we got for cabinetry and stairs was about 175k. DHs is abut 200 sf and we did buy the cabinetry, which was about 15k.
