Mary, Maria, Miriam, and Mariam are all the same name in different languages. I don't think most people will think of leprosy when they hear the name Mariam. I mean, David killed a man and slept with his wife and as punishment his child died but people still use the name David and don't associate it with adultery.

If it was me, I would probably say something like, "Oh, thank you so much for the feedback! We decided to take your advice and we have changed her name to Pryncyss instead - thanks again!" and then proceed to name her Mariam.

Even if your mother isn’t hateful about the name (which is beautiful, by the way) after the baby is born, are you not concerned about your daughter being exposed to such a person? Her “thoughts” will likely be shared at some point. That is the bugger question here.

I would assume Mariam was Persian, since everyone I know with that name is of Iranian descent. I always liked it personally - easy to recognize/pronounce but just a little different. Although I've seen Americans assume the name is Maryanne, which must be annoying. Either way, go with the name you love OP!

I like Mariam best of your list! It’s lovely! I’m sorry you’re friends and family were awful. I think you should go with the name you like; once they associate it with your baby I bet they’ll come around to it.

Mariam really is a beautiful name. Ignore the haters. Your parents had their chance to pick baby names. They need to be quiet.


I'm a people pleaser, I guess, and would never say something rude to someone's face about a baby name so I was really taken aback. Once someone even told me she was thinking of using the name Jaymes for a girl and I was appalled but didn't say anything negative.

Every Miriam I ever knew was a beautiful warm person. It's a beautiful name. Not trendy, but classic and timeless. It has a lyrical quality and I am not religious.

Your Mom will have to deal. Her opinion shouldn't matter, and I say that as a 60 something year old. She's out of line.

Also, Miriam is the Jewish version of Mary and Mariam is the Muslim version. I have no issues with those names but would just assume you weren’t Christian.


DP. I know a Palestinian Christian and a few little girls from Catholic families with the name Mariam. It's Arabic but not exclusively Muslim.
