PP, my guess is the DCs of many posters here applied ED and were not successful. Strongly doubt that learning your DD applied ED is the first they’ve learned about this option. And, FWIW, not all schools offer an ED2.

We miscalculated with my dc’s REA. She goes to a small private where a lot of the REA school’s faculty send their children. They were the ones who got in bc the school doesn’t want to lose talented faculty, think people who run their own labs. Also we have a couple of really, really rich alumni who send their kids to the school. We won’t make the same mistake with kid #2.

This really makes sense and was a source of conflict between us and DC/college counselor. Fortunately DC got in ED, but the two EAs submitted and the rest of the list did not have a single school with a 70% admit rate. DC has high, high GPA/test scores, but I kept saying "anything can happen." College counselor kept saying that the rest of the list was okay with schools in the 25-40% admit range. Again, fortunately ED came through as I was dreading the remainder of December.

You are indeed lucky. That’s exactly how some very accomplished students end up stuck at community college for a year.

And, alas, DH was kinda siding more with DC and the college counselor than me with a view of college admissions not necessarily reflecting the current reality. It never really developed into an overt conflict but could be WWIII right now if the cards had come up differently last week. Happened to an accomplished kid at DC's school last year. The school where they ended up is fine, but was really, really not what they had envisioned and may not have been picked with a little more attention to the likely/safety end of the list.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound exclusive. My vague sense is that since private schools are generally smaller there's more of a cap on how many kids might go to a specific college. But I don't have any experience with public school college admissions.
