+1. I am a fan of the wines of the Loire. I would be inclined to go to Calvert Woodley, give them your price range, and ask for advice.

Actually, I had Bluemont red farm table wine recently and was blown away how good it was. Maybe $30/bottle not sure. Not sure where to buy other than the vineyard itself.

There are some decent bottles here and there in VA- I like the Cab Franc from Paradise Springs, but to just go to a store and pick one you haven't had before is NOT a good idea. I don't think OP is going to go to a winery, do a full tasting then pick a bottle for this one particular gift.

Buy either of the $10-$30 French Bourdeauxs or Margeaux at Trader Joe's for red. pardon any misspelling, moving on. .

What is your price point?
Do you know what kind of wine they like? If you don't know their taste I would agree with PP and get them something sparkling like prosecco

Apothic Red is pretty bad.

Or Germany either, sorry. Way too sweet.
VA wine is pretty bad in general. There are some that are decent but super over-priced.

I think this German mulled wine makes a nice holiday gift. It is not expensive and is really tasty. And it can only be purchased this time of year. It looks like they have limited stock at a lot of the Total Wine stores, but maybe you will get lucky and find one near you with some in stock.

Another vote for anything from Barboursville. If they like it, you could suggest that they visit the winery. Barboursville wine was one of the Virginia wines on the wine list at Inn at Little Washington. I am giving my Christmas host their Octogan wine.

You can't go wrong with a bottle of sancerre.
