St. Johns has a lot more lower and middle class kids. GDS has a lot more UMC + wealthy kids. The schools are very different.

I could see looking at these two schools for my DS because they are both larger, co-ed schools with strong academics. Previous poster gave all-boys schools as an alternative to St. John's. Hopefully your child can visit if admitted.

I find this common idea that if you are looking at x schedule ok, then you can’t also look at y school to be very odd. I know we looked at a bunch of varying schools based on a particular sport my DC plays. We know all the schools on our list are very different other than the sport in question, and we like having options and considering the many paths forward. Why NOT consider all the angels?

Agree. Never heard of anyone getting “very good signs” from GDS in advance of decision release, especially before applications are even due.

I must agree too. These schools are so polar opposites. People who apply to GDS for all practicality don't ally to SJC and vice versa. The overlaps with SJC would be Prep and Gonzaga and St. Anselem. I can't imagine anyone applying to GDS and not understanding the distinct difference between wokery progressivism and Catholic social justice.

Since you've already applied to both, I'd suggest waiting for the admissions outcomes before exerting any more mental energy on this.

St. John’s can be difficult to get into due to volume of applications. It is a popular school in this area because it is not a size fits all school. It has a wide base of learners. From the Benilde program for students with mild learning differences to average students and the scholar program for high achieving students. It has good college counseling and placements. As other posters have said, the athletic program is competitive and the facilities are comparable to college level. From what you have described of your son, St. John’s is probably the best choice.

Then you probably did your homework. Why did you apply to those two places? Or is this a see what sticks and then do the research strategy?

The founder of Under Armour is a St John’s alum and has been pouring $$$ into the sports program. GDS is not known for sports. If your kid is a great athlete with a love in a sport, it will be a joke.

St John’s is much larger.

St John’s is a Catholic school. GDS is secular.

Not just sports. We have a new performing arts center as well.
