There is a difference between dirty and cluttered.

My family of 4 lives in a tiny home where we cannot actually put away everything that needs to be put away. It's always cluttered, despite a minimalist outlook.

We take off our shoes, clean weekly, etc, but it's still terribly, terribly cluttered. And that makes it hard to clean, which is such a pain.

I wouldn’t say we are affluent, but we could easily afford a cleaning service. But I am lazy and tired. I’m a SAHM with little kids, DH works long hours, house is always super cluttered and I can’t deal with tidying up before the maid comes. Did it for year when we just had one kid, but I just don’t have the time or energy at the moment. Plus with Covid, we hang out at home all the time and there aren’t as many places I am comfortable to go to hang out for hours while someone cleans.

Omg…My in laws are like this too, they live on 10 plus acres in Middleburg and have four huge furry drooly dogs so everything has a weird crust of dog drool and fur even with cleaners and there’s tons of poop in the yard. They also have horses.

Yes! Hunting dogs? Mine were raised (by wolves) in boarding schools (St. Mark's and Andover) with absent parents so they never learned housekeeping. And they are buzzed most of the time, so it's hard to notice the mess after 1 or 2 or 3 bottles of wine. I found poop on the toilet seat in their powder room - they were waiting for the crew to clean it up. They don't have ANY cleaning supplies in the house, other than dishwashing liquid and dishwasher tabs.

All of our kids’ friends take their shoes off though. It’s common in our friend group.

I know plenty of well off people. Most don't take shoes off indoors. Their houses are fine. Even with dogs and cats.

It seems the world is divided into those who take shoes off and those who don't. The nasty secret is that everyone is just as healthy and clean either way. But do what makes you happy. We take shoes of but we don't think lesser of those who don't and think them dirtier.

Yep, this is it. Also dirty kitchens and bathrooms, cats and cat litter or cat hair on countertops and tables. Smelly houses in general from not airing the house daily or changing the sheets often enough. My ILs change their sheets every 2 weeks and don't air out the house that much, so their house smells like old people and dogs. Musty, dirty or damp towels in the powder room. No liner in the bathroom trash, so they throw all the nasty stuff (panty liners, dirty tissues, used floss) directly in the can and the trash can reeks. Mine also never clean up the trash can in the kitchen and they let the trash sit there for a week and the smell is overwhelming.

Yep. When we visit, we bring extra shoes because one of my kids will inevitably step into dog poop. They also refuse to use the dishwasher, so they "wash" (barely rinse) all the dishes in dirty soapy water and then they let them air dry. Almost all the forks and knives have old, nasty, crusty food leftovers from who knows when.
