My DD has cold symptoms too. Ugh.

Two negative tests (different days) and we are keeping her out of preschool today.

We are letting family know about it to give them first right of refusal, but we're still planning to visit family now that we've ruled out COVID. Let your family decide. Colds are not the end of the world, but I do understand if people are dealing with restrictive quarantine policies that would upend their life.

There’s a difference between a sterile environment and not going out and purposely infecting others with a cold that should be kept home.

It’s called not being a selfish a-hole. No one wants to be sick for days and miss school and work because you had to eat a bunch of food with grandma Larla and Uncle Joe. You are not that important, sorry. DH caught a nasty cold from a coworker that went through our house right after Halloween- we missed a ton of work and school, had to do covid tests and ended up with a horrible cough that lasted weeks.

This. People are getting flattened for days by “just a cold” spread by family, friends, coworkers. DD got it at work, spread it to her BF, who spread it to three people at his small employer. No idea if they also spread it to their families, but DD is pretty annoyed at her coworker who could have WFH.


That’s how colds have spread since the dawn of time. Who cares?

NP. Stop with the "what's wrong with people." Whats wrong is that a lot of us missed all the winter holidays with our families last year and it's a reallybhard choice to cancel at the last minute this year, especially when we don't live close and see them frequently. For my husband and his family, it's the first holiday since his mom died a couple months ago, after we missed out on a lot of what we didnt know would be her last year of life, so yeah, it's kind of a big deal to them.

OP here. Thank you for the sympathy — especially those who are or have been in similar situations!

I wasn’t asking if we should go to thanksgiving (my family are immigrants so the holiday itself isn’t super meaningful to us and I don’t want to give anyone a cold either!) just venting that I don’t get to loved ones I haven’t seen in months sooner. If my parents want, we may see them outside later in the week but clearly a full day hanging out at my sister’s place is a no-go with a coughing toddler, regardless of why the cough.

Hope everyone gets to catch up with their families soon and their kids feel better!
