I’ve never been allowed to put more than $2,000 or so on a credit card when buying a car.

Just bought a new Subaru last week and was allowed to put $5K on my Amex platinum. Financed the rest thru Subaru’s captive (Chase)

We bought a new car in April 2020 when nobody was buying cars and they let us put the whole thing on card. I was surprised they said yes then and don’t think there’s a chance in hell that it would happen now.

Not sure why you're being so dense but there is no way a dealer will let you charge the full price of the car on your Amex without levying a surcharge to cover the fee. The language makes it clear that the obligation is only to let you charge 2k minimum and most dealers won't go a penny more.

^^^To clarify, this was 2016. I bought the car with about a 18 percent discount from MSRP, brand new car with less than 20 miles. It was the EX-L model, which is the most popular.

It was a surprise to me but Honda in Dulles allowed me to charge the full price of a new Odyssey to my credit card. It was about 35k. I thought I would get the standard 3000 or 5000, but they allowed the whole thing with no surcharge. It has never happened since. My CC has a 75k limit…

That said, the OP is a doofus. The language is very clear that the dealers are obligated to charge 2000 to a card, and that any amount above that is up to them. They can accept, or refuse. Double eyeroll on reference to "facts".

In 2010 dealerships were desperate to sell any car to anyone under any circumstances.

I used to buy cars, pay college tuition, vacations, you name it on the credit card for points. Sellers got wise to this years ago and imposed limits. Sorry!

The agreed to let up put the whole car on our card in 2012, with a 3% surcharge. We went with traditional financing.

'Up to' isn't defined. A reasonable person can read it as being defined by how much to consumer chooses or how much the dealer chooses. In this market, there is no reason for a dealer to not cap it at 2k. A few years ago when they were desperate to move inventory, they may have allowed it up to purchase price.

It does not say "is subject to limits imposed by the dealer."

NP but that's a second limit, not an explanation of the first limit. Dealers have agreed to accept the AmEx as payment for [$2k-purchase price] on the car. That [amount] is not uniform and will vary by dealership. Also, you cannot put more on your card than your available credit. That is a limitation by AmEx and is how all credit cards work.
