Non-ivy person here. I have wonderful friends who do alum interviews for their Ivy alma maters. They are very down to earth people (mostly rugby players) who are just trying to help the school and prospective students.
I know there are people full of hot air at Ivies, but not everyone is like that and not every aspect is about ego. Though I completely disagree w/ OP's comment about how "easier" it was 30 years ago. Then, my kid wouldn't even have a shot coming from public school w/ no connections. That seemed a little entitled to me.
