There is little reason for students to go 30 minutes out of Pittsburgh, however.

As opposed to Western PA? Go 30 minutes outside of Pittsburg, and you’ll see as many confederate flags as anywhere in the south.

Disagree. Pitt has become PITT because it is located in a fun, urban city that has a lot to offer. Also, proximity to major urban areas like Philadelphia, NY and DC. Auburn is in the middle of nowhere. That will always be a big drawback to many people.
It's in a cute college town an hour and a half from Atlanta (Pittsburg is 7 hours from NY, btw). Not everyone wants to be in a city.
“Cute college towns “ are in the eyes of the beholder. They also offer none of the career/ internship opportunities that urban areas do, let alone options for cultural experiences. Sorry, but I don’t see Auburn as anywhere close to this.
And you base this on?
Tim Cook (Apple), Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia) and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin went to Auburn. Pitt is a fine school, but Mr. Rogers and Joe Manganiello are at the top of Pitt’s “famous alumni” list. (On the acting side, Auburn has Octavia Spencer, which I’d take over Joe Mangianiello any day.)
