This is the thing, the D3 lacrosse players might not have the skills for high D1 lacrosse. But they are astute enough to understand that playing for a place like Amherst will pay dividends down the road long after the lax bro at Scuse has hung up his stick.

It is a joke D3. I never played Lacrosse in my life and was offered a “full scholarship” I thought it was a joke.

So I meet with coach I think it is a scam gives me paperwork to sign. I say I got to bring it home to have Mom look over.

It was a local college so lived at home. Turns out the deal was first I get injured I get cut from team they are not liable, second I had to quit my part time job during season, third tge school would still take all my financial aid money. I was on full financial aid. So in effect no scholarship.

I go back and say no but why did I get asked. He tells me well you are six foot two inch, 210 pounds and ran track in HS I could use you as a defender on practice vs. starters. In other words a tackling dummy. Turns out over 1/2 team in full financial aid already so fake scholarships. Only the good starters had real scholarships

A coach for my kids club team plays D3. He said spring semester is all lacrosse and school, but being at a D3 gives more flexibility in the off season to do other things. They can do a fall semester abroad and play in that country’s club team, for example.

Really depends on if you are looking for money or admissions help. Most D1 schools will be recruiting well into summer before senior year, however, they likely wont have any scholarship $$ left. Make that clear up front when you reach out to coaches. Many schools especially private schools have historically had trouble filling rosters with enough preferred walkons (A little different in the past year or two with all the fifth-year seniors).

Just tell your kid to go to the best academic school that they can get into that feels right to them and is a good fit for you financially.
Injuries happen. Life happens. Lacrosse is a small part of it. The big picture is their future and post graduation.
Wherever they go they'll have fun. D-I is more work, but it's also more elite.
But do they want to play D-I so bad they are willing to ride the bench and be on TV a few times a year on the sideline? Or do they want to play a bigger role on a DIII team? If they aren't a top 6 recruit for that DI coach, than they're probably gonna be a role player at best. Especially now with so many kids having an extra year of eligibility.
If lacrosse is a big part of their identity and the focal point of their college decision, please consider how they'll handle it if suddenly they're buried on the depth chart.

Was he talking to any others? I don’t think you really have to start over but probably up the talks with schools you had previously been talking to but maybe had on the back burner. My kid just looked at all the schools regardless of division (1,2 or 3) and determined the school and team she liked best.
