As the younger sister I never wanted my sisters stuff and refused it when it was given. I'd rather go without clothing than take hers (which I did sometimes as my parents put all the effort into her - and I'd have to wait till grandparents visited to get me clothing). My sister took everything.

No reason why a 14 year old can't have a nice piece of jewelry.

Why is that?

Well, at 14 things get lost, traded with friends, borrowed by friends, etc. At 14 they simply don't know how to value things like jewelry. Because they don't work for their money. Also, their taste will probably change in the next ten years. You don't wear the same jewelry at 24 that you did at 14.

Maybe that is a parenting issue as at 14 if your child doesn't know the value of things and know not to borrow or trade, that's on you. And, you don't need to work for money to understand it. You need parents to work with you and set a good example.

If you get a nice gold necklace or earrings they can wear it at 24. Its a lovely gift.
