Why not? I have some nice pieces that I got as gifts as a kid and a young teen that I still treasure, and sometimes wear.

This.
Why is that?
Well, at 14 things get lost, traded with friends, borrowed by friends, etc. At 14 they simply don't know how to value things like jewelry. Because they don't work for their money. Also, their taste will probably change in the next ten years. You don't wear the same jewelry at 24 that you did at 14.

Why not? Nice could just be a gold necklace or earrings. You can always put it away for when they are older its a nice gift they will always have from you.
