+1 I heard of this and was thankful that my family didn't do it. (No offense) My mom was given a half sari by her mom when her period began and they had a moment together, but there was no ceremony. Is having an event a family tradition?

In some South Indian communities it’s still a huge event. The entire village is invited and it’s almost like a wedding. My grandmother wanted to have one for all her granddaughters but thankfully all her children shut down the idea.

The invitation says “no gifts please.” Should we really not bring anything? Or maybe gift cards?

No need to bring gifts. If you want you can give a cash gift or check for $21, $51 or $101 in an envelope or card for each kid.

Dhoti ceremony is a coming of age ceremony for boys and they get to wear a dhoti for the first time.

Equivalent to Janeu (thread) ceremony for Hindu boys.
