All that said, I am a Black woman who purchased her first gun (a Glock 9mm) last month.

It’s important to have more Black gun owners….especially Black women. I’ll de dammed if I let republican Qooks be the only gun owners in this country.

I am curious why you thought you need a gun in the first place. Are you not somewhere where police is nearby? You know you are far more likely to use that gun on yourself than an criminal right?

I’m curious why you feel the need to interrogate her about her choices to protect herself. Why do you give yourself such authority over a woman?

I am not I am just curious to her reasoning. I don’t think most gun owners are aware of how of a danger they are to themselves and others versus some imaginary home invasion scenario a good pair of locks would solve

Exactly. I hate guns and have no interest in ever owning one. My only experience shooting them was bb guns in elementary school summer camp (back in the 80s) and one time (literally just pulling the trigger once) shooting a pistol in my early 20s. I hated it, I hated the way it felt in my hand (the kick back feeling) and never ever want to do it again.

But :20 and 1:51 (same poster?) definitely makes me feel the NEED to run out and buy as many guns and ammo as I can.

Millennials are less concerned with sensitivities. I see it all the time.

Curious why you bought your first gun, PP. Do you live or work in a dangerous area?

I’ve wanted one for years, but I never got off my butt to get one. The opportunity presented itself when I went to the Gun Show at Dulles Expo, so I got it.

I’ll also note, I was thrilled to see there were many Black people at the gun expo.

I do not work of live in a dangerous area….but, I am a single woman.

I go to this show all the time. Although I’m more of a stereotypical attendee (white, male, conservative/libertarian, Veteran, own lots of guns), I’m glad you took it upon yourself to go to the show.

Because your being there proved to you firsthand that gun owners aren’t a bunch of snarling racist a-holes. I’m glad you went, I hope you felt welcome there, and I congratulate you for having the epiphany that your safety is first and foremost in your hands, and then setting about to equip yourself responsibly for that.

Take your friends to the show and the range. Open their eyes, too.

Good for you. Congratulations! If you haven’t already, take a gun safety course and go to the range to get used to handling, loading, firing, and unloading checking it is clear. Keep it locked too unless you don’t have kids / kids in the house ever.

This is what responsible gun owners do. Magically, the gun won’t get up and load itself and start randomly shooting people like many anti-gun nuts will claim. Shooting crimes, accidents, and suicides are about people, not about an inanimate tool.

Keep it locked anyway. Horrible unintentional things can happen even between friends when a gun is easily accessible. Probably rare but why risk it.

Yup. It’s about people with access to guns. Someone isn’t gonna magically do those things without easy access to guns.

The "gun violence" that is surging is in overwhelmingly deep blue jurisdictions. Of course actually addressing that is hard, good thing it is easier to advocate for taking away the rights of law abiding citizens.

No one is advocating for your rights to be taken away. Turn off OANN, my guy.

Ummmm read about 4 posts above yours. Not only is she advocating gun rights be taken away, she literally wants gun owners murdered by the police en-masse.

It’s not paranoia if someone really IS out to get you.

Also, the only way to address gun violence is to address it on a national scale….and because there are so many damn guns out there, it’ll take decades to see any results. But, yeah, let’s keep claiming nothing is being done when you are too damn scared to do support this country doing anything for fear of losing your symbol of masculinity.

And let’s be clear, you don’t give a shit about Chicago beyond using it as a talking point.
