It is detrimental to our society just as much as covid deniers! These people are torturing themselves.
Will they even see you if you go there? Or will they insist you wish them dead?
Its not fear and they may have health issues. Covid has killed 750K people just in the US alone. Many millions around the world. You can deny covid and make fun of them but they are right to be careful. OP refuses to travel.

Kids can test upon arrival.
I don't know about the - they don't like having you stay with them and there is nothing to do - part. That is a whole different issue.
I have friends like this in my life and sad to say, they're just not going to be part of my life anymore. But it's not my parents. Sorry OP. Sucks.
This.
Do you and your kids have underlying conditions? I get being COVID cautious, but at this point, many, many people have and are traveling. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the flying with kids is so hard argument. Sure, but you get through it.
Anyway, TL : DR - I'd make a plan to fly there and see them.

You could drive out there in a road-trip or you can get on a plane. Everything is not on them.

Easier for whom?
